Customs pick shows disregard

It is rather disheartening to see government ministers appointing persons to run government departments without them having any record of experience or history with that organisation.

The recent announcement that Major Richard Reese is to become the next commissioner of customs has sent shock waves throughout the Customs fraternity. It's like 'déjà vu all over again'.

Kingston Wharves hit by weaker economy

KINGSTON Wharves recorded a 43.5 per cent year-on-year decline in net profit during its 2011 financial year.

The cargo handler posted $345.6 million in net profit for the 12 months to December 31, 2011, down $266 million from the $611.6 million it showed for 2010.

Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) has struck a more than J$300-million deal with auditing and consultancy firm Pricewaterhouse-Coopers Jamaica to handle the divestment of shipment hub Kingston Container Terminal (KCT), one of the region's busiest ports.

The move to privatise the profitable port comes as it embarks on another round of expensive expansion.

 

Port Authority has negotiated at least two contracts with PwC amounting to a total US$3.825 million (J$333 million).
